Visite Gordes

Gordes, a village with a unique history and heritage

Gordes’ must-see sights

The village is packed with historic sites that bear witness to its rich past. Here are a few not-to-be-missed visits.

Château de Gordes, a Renaissance fortress

Dominating the village’s central square, the Château de Gordes is its historic heart. Its construction began in the XIᵉ century, before undergoing a renaissance in modern times, closely linked to theart of Victor Vasarely.

In 1948, the artist discovered Gordes and the light of the village transformed his work. He financed the restoration of the château to house his museum, which opened from 1970 to 1996, bringing the village back to life.

Today, the château hosts temporary art exhibitions, perpetuating its cultural and artistic heritage.

Sénanque Abbey, an icon of Provence

Just a few kilometers from the village of Gordes lies the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sénanque. Founded in the XIIᵉ century, this abbey is a remarkable testimony to Cistercian architecture, built entirely of local stone.

The abbey is still inhabited by a community of monks, who live according to the rule of Saint Benedict. A visit to Sénanque Abbey is a highlight of any stay in the Vaucluse, a place where spirituality and Provencal heritage meet.
